Alena Dvorakova - Viktor Fischer, The Tallest Czech. Tomas Pustina was born thirty some years ago in Humpolec. He was always extremely tall, but his real problems began at the age of 18, when he was involved in a serious bicycle accident and had to undergo an operation, which resulted in one leg becoming 30 cm shorter. The leg also had to be screwed together in a way that he is not able to bend it at all. Because of his abnormal height of 2.3 metres, Tomas quickly found himself cut off from mainstream society, and is completely dependent on his parents for help. He spends most of his time at home. He can barely bend over to get through the doors of his apartment building and he is not able to wash or dress himself without help. For Tomas, even simple actions such as climbing stairs and sitting in a car requires an unimaginable effort. When he was troubled by pains in his ankle a few years ago, he had to be carried to the hospital by six fire-fighters. On the recommendation of his doctor, his parents tried to arrange treatment for him at a spa, but was at first refused because of his height. The situation changed only after his plight was publicized in the media. Half a year later, we are still encountering problem after problem, and unresolvable difficulties relating to life in a society which has been "standardized" for the average person, and others find themselves on the outside, beyond the scope of our attention and concern. Our main aim is to bring into public focus Tomas Pustina and all others like him, who have, through no fault of their own, become ostricized from society, and help ordinary people to understand their often inconceivable difficulties. The entire project and resulting exhibition are supported by our own private resources. The exhibition will travel around the Czech Republic under the sponsorship of ADRA.
